CHAPTER SEVEN

Kara

I had not been expecting Eric, my brother, to show up at my doorstep.

The last time we talked, Eric was talking about his shitty life and how he would love to come back to River Hall. I hadn’t taken him seriously.

“There you are, sister!” he cried as soon as I opened the door, pulling me into a warm hug.

The surprise soon faded. My heart beat with joy at the sight of him. When Eric left River Hall many years ago, he had been a thin teenager with sunken cheeks. Now, he weighed more than I did with fat cheeks and a smooth face.

“What? You came back?”

Eric pushed his luggage into my room, checking out the apartment. “You’ve changed everything. Did you get rich while I was gone?”

I responded with a laugh, closing the door behind us. “I had someone change the design, and it did cost me money.”

“I love it.”

I was also impressed by the new appearance of my apartment. One month ago, I had changed the decor, repainted the old walls, and tiled the bathrooms. What had once been an apartment with a bland look now shone with beauty, the kind that brought a homely bliss with it.

Jude Castiers had added to the perfect feeling. Once he started staying over at my place and cooking meals with me, I didn’t want to ever leave my house.

Oh, my God! Jude!

Eric was here, and he didn’t have anywhere else to go to. That would mean taking in my brother. It also meant I would see less of Jude in this apartment.

“Are you going to be staying here?” I asked Eric.

My brother flopped down on my sofa, raising an eyebrow at my question. “Don’t you want me to stay here?”

“Not that I don’t….” I stuttered. “I just…”

“You’re seeing someone?” Eric noted, breaking into a wide smile.

I blushed. “Not really.”

“Tell me everything about him!”

“Come on,” I said to Eric. “I’ll make coffee for you.”

I went into my kitchen and began to brew coffee for my brother. He was now with me, possibly to ask me about my boyfriend.

I didn’t want to call Jude my boyfriend. We had had sex once and never called ourselves lovers. Although Jude confessed his love for me after the sex, I deemed it normal. He loved the sex and couldn’t restraint himself from professing his feelings.

“Come on, Kara.” That was Eric. “You can’t hide him from me.”

“It’s complicated, Eric.”

“I still want to hear about him.”

“Let’s talk about you instead,” I said and faced him, folding my arms at the same time. “Why did you leave the city?”

Eric breathed hard. His shoulders dropped, and I watched a sad look spread across his face.

“Oh, my God.” I crossed the room to him. “Did something bad happen?”

“Someone stole my project,” Eric confessed.

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I came up with a project to create drugs capable of curing most terminal diseases. The project has got potential, but someone took it from me.”

“What?” I yelled. “Why would anyone do that?”

“It was one of my colleagues.
